A-136 Chiari1 Malformation and Syringomyelia: The Role of Neuropsychological Assessment in Treatment and Education Planning

Abstract Objective: Chiari 1 malformation (CM1) occurs when the cerebellum bulges through an opening at base of skull, putting pressure on brain and spinal cord. CM1 is frequently related to syringomyelia, characterized by a fluid filled cyst in associated with sensorimotor symptoms such as headache, weakness arms, difficulty walking. This case study will expand upon existing literature regarding neurodevelopmental impact. Method: In this single study, 13-year, 5-month old male CM1/S was seen for neuropsychological assessment. Diagnosis foramen magnum decompression suboccipital craniectomy C1 laminectomy occurred five months prior. Evaluation subsequent concerns executive functioning, literacy skills, handwriting. Educational disabilities were recognized but not his neurological condition. Results: Assessment revealed average verbal non-verbal cognitive low working memory, extremely processing speed. Phonological awareness intact. memory low. Rapid naming below average. Measures functioning flexibility suggested weaknesses. Upper extremity fine motor speed coordination fell impaired range. Academically, broad mathematics skills within range while reading writing Conclusions: The neurodevelopment children syringomyelia comorbid disorders well characterized. Neuropsychological assessment follow-up critical diagnosing disorders, educational planning, monitoring overall development. Neuropsychology can play role facilitating understanding impact settings.
